Sherry Rehman formally takes charge as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States of America

On Wednesday, January 18, 2012 Pakistan’s new ambassador to the United States of American (USA) after she presented her credentials to the American president Barack Obama at Oval Office in the White House.

Pakistan replaced Hussain Haqqani after the former ambassador was entangled in the memogate where he was accused of conspiring against the Pakistan army.

Meanwhile, Pakistan is seeking to normalize its estranged relations with US after a series of events left the coalition partners bitter at each other.

Relations hit rock bottom after the November 24 border intrusion by NATO forces, which killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

Consequently, Pakistan has shut down all road passages for NATO supplies and now the country is reassessing its relations with the US.

It is believed that Rehman will patch things with the US as she enjoys good reputation among US politicians.

Rehman is also believed to be backed by the Pakistan Army as the army wanted Haqqani replaced with a more suitable candidate.

Since her arrival in the US capital earlier this month, 51-year-old Rehman has already presented her credentials to the US State Department’s Under Secretary for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman.

Following the presentation of her credentials, Rehman also met US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Deputy Secretary of State Tom Nides and Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Marc Grossman.

Speaking on US-Pakistan relations, US State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said, “Our message to Pakistan has been very clear. The secretary spoke about this last week after she saw Ambassador Rehman. I would guess that the White House will speak
about this today. We want to — we believe we both need a strong, continuing, cooperative relationship across the range of important issues, political, economic, security. We want to get back to the full range of business together, and we want to do that as
soon as the Pakistani side is fully ready to have those conversations with us.”
