The Supreme Court has left the case unsolved and postponed Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani’s contempt hearing to February 1.
Gilani, who was issued a contempt of court notice for not following court orders regarding the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) implementation case, appeared before the apex court to justify his act of ignoring court orders.
Without a doubt, Gilani’s appearance before the seven bench commission clearly depicts his respect for the judiciary of Pakistan. Gilani drove his car to the supreme court along with his lawyer, Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan.
He is now the third Prime Minister of Pakistan, who has appeared before the court because of contempt notice. After his arrival, Gilani told judges that Swiss cases can only be reopen only if Asif Ali Zardari stops working as the President.
He stressed that these cases cannot be opened right now, because according to the constitution of Pakistan, he enjoys full immunity as the President.
Ahsan demanded a one-month time from the court to submit a response. He expressed that he would need some time to go through the case files whereas Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk told that access to records could be provided within two days.
Gilani told judges that he, “appeared before the apex court previously as well…Benazir Bhutto and Nusrat Bhutto also appeared before courts during their lifetimes. We respect the courts…my intention is to respect the constitution and my associates also respect
the constitution. I decided to appear before the court immediately after getting the notice.”
He further stated that the President Zardari enjoys full immunity under the 18th Amendment. Moreover, he said the president was elected by two-third majority of the parliament, therefore it is not right to hand him over to the foreign courts.
“It will not give a good message to proceed against a president who is elected by a two-thirds majority. I have discussed this with my friends and experts, and they all agree that he has got complete immunity,” Gilani added.
On top of that, he also said that he had not done anything that could lead him to the contempt of court.
