Microsoft is embarking on what is believed to be its biggest challenge yet—the end of the road for x86 architecture.
Microsoft stitched up the PC market tight. It was in the right place at the right time and managed to get to a position of dominance that has lasted over 20 years. It’s been a good run. But Microsoft’s success was based on the PC at the most and we have now entered what is most definitely a ‘post-PC’ era.
What is ‘post-PC’? If the PC era was symbolized by big desktops and knee-breaking notebooks, ‘post-PC’ is the vice versa; small, lightweight, low-power and more personal devices that can be used more conveniently on the go. This brings in both tablets and contemporary smartphones. Although both these devices were first launched by MS but the credit for metamorphosis goes to Apple and then Google.
MS brought smartphone operating system into the equation to compete on the cell phone front but so far the egg has not hatched and it remains the third best contender in the market.
However, notebook and desktop market, or what is remaining of it, still belongs to Microsoft and its operating system, the legendary Windows.
Due to the increasing interest in the tablet culture, the company has brought a new version of the Windows, the Windows 8 into the fold. The new edition to the conventional window-based operating system now brings more to the table.
