Pervez Musharraf postpones his homecoming
Thursday, January 19th, 2012 4:39:20 by Faisal FarooqPervez Musharraf, the former president and chief of his own faction, All Pakistan Muslim League (APML), Thursday delayed his return to Pakistan after Islamabad warned that he would be arrested if he lands in the country.
He reached the decision after he made consultation with his party members about his homecoming plans what he had announced earlier this month.
According to the reports, close aides and friends of the former president met him last week, advising him strongly to put off a homecoming in menace of apprehension. Some media reports claimed that the final decision has not been yet taken and absolute announcement would be uttered by the former military man at the earliest.
A report quoting a party’s vice president, Amjad Hussain, stated, “His (Musharraf) friends and party officials want him to postpone it for sometimes. This was discussed yesterday at a meeting and conveyed to him.”
The vice chairman confirmed his doubts, “I do feel endangered. There is a danger certainly, but you take your own protection and then leave things to destiny. Nobody can ensure you 100 percent protection.”
Reports of his arrest on arrival on account of cases registered against him have also surfaced lately. A day back, Interior Minister Rehman Malik had assured the Senate that Pervez Musharraf would be apprehended on his arrival in Pakistan.
“I assure this house that if he lands in Pakistan, he will be arrested because he is a proclaimed offender in the Benazir Bhutto murder case,” the interior minister held. He proposed that the upper house should pass a resolution against former ruler as he had violated the Constitution.
A day before the Rehman Malik’s remarks about the former ruler, PPP Senator Raza Rabbani submitted a 10-point charge sheet in Senate, calling for the former dictator’s arrest.
A court in Balochistan, in October last year, issued a warrant for Pervez Musharraf’s arrest over the killing Baloch nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Bugti in the military operation, back in 2006.
General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf seized power in 1999, in Pakistan third military coup, and was forced to step down as president in 2008 after the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) formed a government following elections.
