Sensible Choice: Aitzaz slightly diffuses tensions between government and judiciary

Playing logically rather than politically, Aitzaz Ahsan, the counsel of Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani in the contempt of court notice, played lawfully in the Supreme Court.

Aitzaz Ahsan, who was engaged by the premier in the contempt of court notice, was one of the key leaders in the lawyers’ movement. He was one of the figures paved the way for ending the dictatorial rule in the country.

This mystery has not been resolved why Ahsan, who has a good stature and understanding of the complexities, decided to jump into the mess. However, his joining has showed positive moves and apparently tensions were moving toward diffusion.

As a professional, he might be thinking that the premier has been unfairly issued contempt of court notice and he jumped into the ring for a fair trial. Maybe he has been taken the case a professional lawyer or perhaps wanted to save the party in the hard times.

Whatever is the reason of his engagement, he will have to take tough time in convincing the court about the deliberations of the incumbent. The ministers and associates of the government openly criticize the judgments of the apex court while a few of them do no miss any opportunity to drag the judges into political mud-slinging campaign.

Almost two years and a few months have been passed since a full bench of the Supreme Court passed an order, asking the government to reopen all the cases closed under the banner of National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).

Among the NRO cases, the cases against our president Asif Ali Zardari were also included in which he allegedly transferred money to Swiss banks through illegal means.

The premier, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, failed to write to Swiss authorities to open the corruption cases against his own president. Apart from that the government did not implement many other orders of the apex court.

As per the expectations, he took the case with a strong defence and knows the law and court very fine. Conversely, his biggest challenge is to untie the perception that the chief executive was protecting corrupt faces under the banner of authorities.

The real challenge for Ahsan will make a change in minds of public that NRO was not used to protect his only party’s co-chairman, President Asif Ali Zardari. At the same time, in the case, Gilani and Aitzaz will have to defend their own fames in the cases.
