Bellflower (2011) – Review
Saturday, January 21st, 2012 3:59:37 by Musa AfridiShot with a homemade camera does Evan Glodell’s directorial debut leave the audience feeling satisfied at the end of the movie or is it a waste of everyone’s time?
Different would be one way to describe this film, though one can rest assured that there are a plethora of words one could use to tag this unique piece of film making.
While the basic plot of the story is one that has been done to death in Hollywood and Bollywood alike, the boy meets girl, both fall in love, both break up and so on, the way Glodell goes about it and the surrounding set pieces make it a unique experience.
Starting things off with the main character of the film the director himself; Evan Glodell takes on the role of Woodrow, who along with his friend Aiden build a flamethrower in their spare time as well as modifying their own car in preparation for a post
apocalyptic world.
From there Milly is introduced and Woodrow begins to fall in love with her when the two compete in a cricket eating competition. One thing leads to another and bada bing bada bong, the two are in love.
Fast forward a few years later and things are not the same as the two seem to have grown apart. Without giving too much away, it is here that the film really comes into its own, cutting back and forth between time periods as Woodrow struggles to make sense
of his life.
The story also goes in a number of different directions and the viewer really has to pay attention otherwise the story will leave him behind and have him wondering what the heck is going on.
The movie itself is fairly long when as it clocks in at 1 hour 48 minutes, yet for some odd reason viewers will want to hang on to the bloody conclusion just to see how all the pieces in the film will fit together.
Verdict: this film is not for everyone and has a unique take on the usual love story premise, yet for those looking for something different, Bellflower may just stand out with its uniqueness and originality.
