American famous singer of yesteryears Etta Jams bid farewell to life on Friday, January 2012 at the age of 73. She earned a great name in the world with her famous song “At Last”. Moreover, she produced many other hits which put her in the huge spotlight.
She was born in January 1938 and dedicated her life to music. Etta proved her skills singing different genres of music such as rock and roll, gospel, blues, rhythm and blue, and Jazz. She started music career in 1950 and was shot to fame with hits like “Dance
With Me”, “Henry”, “I’d Rather Go Blind” and “Tell Mama”. However, like many other celebrities, she also faced a number of personal problems including drug addiction before making a musical resurgence in the late 1980s with the album,
Her long-running friend and manager Lupe De Leon explained the reason of her death. According to the manager, she died from complications from leukemia and had her husband and sons by her side in Riverside, California. She would have turned 74 next Wednesday.
The singer suffered from a number of health issues in recent years, including dementia and hepatitis C.
“This is a tremendous loss for the family, her friends and fans around the world,
De Leon said. “She was a true original who could sing it all – her music defied category. I worked with Etta for over 30 years. She was my friend and I will miss her always.”
James was discovered by Johnny Otis (who also died recently), and had her first hit in the ’50s as a teenager. She later joined the iconic Chess label and scored a string of pop and R&B hits, including “Stormy Weather” and “At Last.” She won six Grammys,
was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and continued to tour and record until recent years.
