The main witness in the memo gate scandal that has Pakistan in its grasp has recently said that he does not want to come to the country in order to testify in front of the Supreme Court regarding the claims he has made against the former Pakistani ambassador
to the US, Hussain Haqqani. The chief witness, Mansoor Ijaz has stated his reason for not coming to Pakistan for the testimony for fear of being detained in the country.
Ijaz, who is a Pakistani businessman based in America, made allegations against Haqqani claiming that the former ambassador asked him to deliver a memo to the US which asked for America’s help in reining in the military of Pakistan. The memo though unsigned,
indicates that it comes from a high authority in the government of Pakistan which is ruled by the Pakistan People’s Party. More specifically, it indicates that the President of Paksitan Asif Ali Zardari may be involved in asking for help from the US as there
was fear in the country that the military of Pakistan might be planning a coup after the death of Osama bin Laden.
In this regard, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, Imran Khan has stated his stance by commenting that in case Ijaz is asked not to testify in the memo gate scandal that will give proof that the allegations that the chief witness is making are correct.
According to the lawyer of Mansoor Ijaz, the chief witness is willing to make his testimony any place other than Pakistan. Once the testimony has been made and recorded ion this way, it will be presented to the Supreme Court of Pakistan in order to facilitate
the investigation.
As soon as the memo gate scandal came to light, tensions arose between the army as well as the civilian government of the country. These tensions have been escalating since that time and there have been rumours abounding that the army of the country may
seek to undertake a coup in th4e event that the political environment of the country does not stabilise. However, efforts have been made by the government to calm things down since then.
