Mansoor Ijaz refuses to come to Pakistan, says Akram Sheikh

Mansoor Ijaz has refused to come to Pakistan and requested the judiciary to testify his statements in London or Zurich.

Ijaz’s lawyer, Akram Sheikh told media reporters that he had a teleconference with his client after he met with the Inspector General of Islamabad Police. He stated that he briefed Ijaz about his security plan, which he considers insufficient and therefore
will not come to Pakistan.

“No assurance has been given with regards to his [Ijaz’s] life or property. It seems like a well-orchestrated trap to hold Ijaz indefinitely in Pakistan… He refuses to knowingly fall into the government’s trap,” Sheikh said.

While responding to a question, related to the Ijaz’s security arrangements ensured by Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Sheikh said, “I don’t trust Rehman Malik. I trust Husain Haqqani more than I trust Rehman Malik… Did Benazir Bhutto not die in this country
even after getting security assurances?”

Previously, Sheikh told that he had written a letter to Attorney General, asking about Ijaz’s security plan during his visit to Pakistan. Moreover, IG Islamabad Police has also assured him of Ijaz’s security during his visit.

Nevertheless, the judicial commission that is questioning the Memogate issue has directed Ijaz to appear before the court in person, but Ijaz has repeatedly expressed concern over his security arrangements in Pakistan. Now, he claims that he and his family
were being terrorized.

The AG Maulvi Anwarul Haq completed Ijaz’s security plan in a meeting with the Defence Secretary. On the contrary, Sheikh claimed that by excluding army from the security plan, the Government wants to stop his client from supplying the important evidence
that links President Asif Ali Zardari to the memo case.

Earlier on Sunday, the Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani declared that the Pakistani-American businessman, Ijaz is responsible for conspiring against Pakistan and its government, therefore the establishment is not interested in spending billions over the
security of such man.

“The interior ministry, in accordance with the rules of business, will provide security to Mansoor Ijaz and, if required, may call the army or Rangers for assistance to the civil government,” Gilani said.
