Real Steel is a 2011 science fiction film which was released in October, 2011 by the Touchstone Pictures. It is directed by Shawn Levy and produced by Susan Montford and Don Murphy. The movie is based in part on the 1956 short story ‘steel’ written by Richard
Matheson and stars Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo, Evangeline Lilly and Kavin Durand.
The $110 million budgeted movie is set in the near future where robot boxing is a top sport. It is centred on a struggling promoter (Jackman) who thinks he’s found a champion in a discarded robot. During his quest to reach the top, he discovers he has an
11-year-old son who wants to come closer to his father.
The movie earned $85 million in North America and $210 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $295 million as of January 21, 2012. It opened to number one spot at the box office and grossed $8.5 million on its opening day and $27.3 million
on its opening weekend.
The movie received mixed to positive reviews from top critics. Review aggregator site, Rotten Tomatoes stated a score of 59 percent, with an average rating of 5.8 out of 10 from 200 critics. It’s general consensus states, “Silly premise notwithstanding,
this is a well-made Hollywood movie: Thrilling and exciting action with just enough characterization.”
Lisa Kennedy of the Denver Post gave it a score of 2.5 out of four and said, “Aas the plot proceeds from boy-meets-dad verbal sparring to an uneasy peace to the underdog-vs.- champion title bout, it becomes increasingly easy to forgive its many nicks.”
Detroit News top film critic, Tom Long, gave it a rating of B and declared, “Real Steel is a blast, an unabashed crowd-pleaser that mixes Rocky, Transformers, video games and father-son bonding to great, if corny, effect.”
Bruce Diones of the New Yorker, however, had a different view as he said, “Its remote-controlled emotional responses leave little room for genuine uplift.”
All in all, Real Steel is a must watch for action lovers.
