Voters’ lists cannot be prepared before May: Chief Election Commission of Pakistan

Islamabad: (Monday, January 23, 2012) Chief Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Justice Hamid Ali Mirza (retd) said today in an advisory meeting with politicians and other stakeholders that voters’ lists were unlikely to be
prepared before May this year.

He was of the view that completing the voters’ lists by February 23, the deadline given by the Supreme Court, was not possible, and the ECP had already sent two summaries regarding the expected delay.

The Election Commission of Pakistan, members’ political parties, civil society, media and other stakeholders held a consultative session today to dwell and contemplate on the key issues for ensuring credible and transparent elections
in Pakistan.

Deliberating with the session, the ECP gave a detailed presentation to the participants on the vital tasks the election body was yet to work on before the next general elections that were expected to be held any time this year.
The presentation also took into account the steps the ECP had taken and planned to take to make the electoral process more effective, credible and transparent.

It was also shared in the session that NADRA and the ECP had doubled their efforts to do with the enormous task of publishing final voters’ lists as early as possible.

Presently, about 10,000 data entry operators are working in three shifts to complete the publication of Preliminary Electoral Rolls.

National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) is to hand over computerized lists of 80.40 million voters containing their names and pictures to the ECP.

Earlier, it was found that about 30.70 million voters were unverified, which have now been deleted. Moreover, the names of youngsters possessing a Computerised National Identity Cards (CNIC) have also been added to the new lists.

Despite the current pace of work on preparing the computerized voters’ lists, they are expected to be published by no sooner than May this year.
