According to media reports from Pakistan, it is believed that Director General Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) agency, Lt. General Shuja Pasha suggested former President General Musharraf to postpone his return to the country.
According to sources, Pasha told Musharraf about the situation in Pakistan where it was not suitable for the former president to return as there could be threats to his life from militant groups, while the current Pakistan government is also seeking to try
Musharraf for breaking the constitution of Pakistan by taking over in a bloodless coup in 1999 when he overthrew the democratically elected government of Nawaz Shareef.
A source, on the condition of anonymity said, “General Pasha, who has remained very close to the former president, held a meeting with him (Musharraf) in Dubai and advised him not to return to the country as the situation is not conducive for his return.”
Meanwhile, on Monday, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution calling for pressing treason charges against former president Pervez Musharraf under Article 6 of the Constitution.
The resolution was presented by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) senior leader Senator Raza Rabbani
According to the resolution the former president should be arrested on arrival since he had suspended the constitution twice and compromised national security by entering into accords with certain countries.
Earlier, this week Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rehman Malik assured that Musharraf would be arrested on his return.
“I assure this house that if he lands in Pakistan, he will be arrested because he is a proclaimed offender in the Benazir Bhutto murder case,” the minister said.
The former president, who is in self exile in England had vowed to return to Pakistan between January 27 and January 30 and lead his political party All Pakistan Muslim League.
However, the General has now cancelled his return, after failing to get guarantees regarding his safe return to Pakistan, a country he ruled for eight years.
