Mansoor Ijaz, who is the chief witness in the memo gate case has recently stated that he will not be coming to Pakistan in order to present his testimony in front of the Supreme Court of Pakistan despite the fact the he has received assurance from Rehman
Malik, the Interior Minister of the country.
Ijaz had previously said that he would not be coming to Pakistan for the testimony as he fears he would be detained in the country and therefore would be giving his testimony elsewhere.
As soon as the interior minister of the country gave his assurance that the chief witness will not be detained the Supreme Court’s appointed commission consisting of three judges asked the lawyer of Ijaz, Akram Sheikh, to talk to his client for 30 minutes
in order to determine his stance now that the situation had changed. However, Ijaz did not change his take on the matter on not visiting the country for the testimony, this time saying that he was concerned in terms of his security if he made the visit to
Pakistan.
The Interior Minister of the country also added the following while commenting on the matter: “If parliamentary committee orders to put anyone’s name (Ijaz) on ECL then the orders would be complied with.”
Ijaz is a Pakistani business man based in America who has alleged that the former Pakistani ambassador to the United States, Hussain Haqqani had asked him to deliver a memo to the US. According to Haqqani, the memo asked for help from the US in order to
rein in the military of Pakistan as the government of Pakistan ruled by the Pakistan’s People’s Party was in fear that the military might be planning a coup after the death of Osama bin Laden. Despite the fact that the note is unsigned, there is talk that
it may have come from the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari.
Ijaz’s lawyer, Akram Sheikh, made the following comments: “No assurance has been given with regards to his [Ijaz’s] life or property. It seems like a well-orchestrated trap to hold Ijaz indefinitely in Pakistan. He refuses to knowingly fall into the government’s
trap.”
