The interior minister of Pakistan, Rehman Malik on Tuesday denied the reports of giving statements against US businessman Mansoor Ijaz and assured the commission investigating memo scandal that latter’s name would not be put on Exit Control List (ECL) after
he touches down in Pakistan.
Justice Qazi Faez Issa , the Chairman of the commission investigating the memo case, had earlier accused the interior minister of intervening in the commission’s affairs and had therefore summoned him to explain his position.
“The commission has ordered the interior minister to appear before the commission today and explain his statements about Mansoor Ijaz’s security,” Maulvi Anwarul Haq, the attorney general had told reporters earlier today.
Later Malik appeared before the commission at the Islamabad High Court to explain his controversial statements regarding the scandal. He told the commission that he never mentioned the American businessman in his statements and blamed the media for misquoting
him. Asked why he did not issue a denial for the false reports, Malik said that his busy routine does not allow him to go through the newspaper.
Besides explaining his point, the interior minister also assured the commission the he would provide high-level security to Ijaz, the central character of Memogate scandal. However, he did add that Ijaz’ demand of two battalions for his security complicated
the issue.
Ijaz is required to the commission investigating the memo case as well the parliamentary committee on national security to submit his response but the American businessman has expressed reluctance over coming to the Pakistan as he fears the might get arrested
after he reaches Pakistan. He has requested the Commission the assure him fool proof security on his arrival to Pakistan.
