Islamabad: (Tuesday, January 24, 2012) Interior Minister Rehman Malik, who was summoned by the apex court for issuing controversial statements to contain Mansoor Ijaz from coming to Pakistan, appeared before the judicial commission
investigating into the memo case today.
While explaining his statements relating to providing complete security to Ijaz on his arrival to Pakistan, the Interior Minister maintained that his statements were misquoted and he had never threatened anyone.
Adding to his reply submitted before the Supreme Court Commission, Malik also informed that Mansoor Ijaz’s name was not being placed on the exit control list (ECL).
Malik submitted before the court that complete security would be provided to the American businessman, who was the core witness to the memo case, when he appears before the commission to which Akram Shaikh, Ijaz’s lawyer, was told
by the commission to contact his client and ask him to come.
Earlier, while starting with the hearing, the court asked Akram Shaikh regarding his client’s absence. Replying to which Shaikh maintained that as his client was the prime witness to the entire case, his security should be ensured.
And amid unsatisfactory security measures and threatening statements on part of government officials, he decided not to enter Pakistan.
Adding that his client was being threatened to appear before the commission, Shaikh also said that the security promised by the interior ministry was not satisfactory.
