Apple’s iPad with a physical keyboard: A peripheral that cannot be neglected – Part 1

Apple’s flagship tablet, the iPad comes with the best specifications in the market and one of the best touch screens among its peers. With a host of applications, compatible with the iOS 4 and 5 on the slate, it is by far the most attractive device out there. In addition to being the assistant in personal scheduling and source of e-books, it is the better source to watch movies and browse web on the go. It reigns the gaming segment that prefers a handheld on gaming consoles like Sony PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

However, the ultra-thin tablet does not come without shortcomings that don’t come with the brand but with the category.  The contemporary tablets are slate-like that boast a capacitive touch screen  and a lot of gismos on mobile operating systems like Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS. But they lack a physical keyboard which was an essential part of the Windows tablets before the original iPad.

Although iPad sports a very interactive keyboard which has all the compatible key-stroke functions that are needed for faster typing, it still lacks the comfort of separate physical keys. During lengthier texts, the typists are prone to lose their bearings over the virtual keyboards that take their toll on the typing speed.

In the light of this need many companies have stepped forward with a number of keyboards and docks with keys nestled inside. These docks fill up the void left by the dearth of a physical typing tool. Moreover, the tablets get a complete makeover when attached to these devices.

Apple, although does not offer any of these peripherals in their product lines, they have created a room for external devices to be attached via Bluetooth.  One of the mainstream makers of such docks is Zagg, Inc. with distribution rights of the Zaggmate to Logitech. The company makes two types of such docks, named ZaggFolio and Zaggmate. The Zagg line gives a complete new look to the device and make it more attractive.
