Red Tails – An interesting War Film of 2012
Anthony Hemingway’s Red Tails is a 2012 war film which was released on January 20th, 2012. It stars Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard and the film is distributed by 20th Century Fox.
The film is the first Lucasfilm production since Radioland Murders (1994). It follows a crew of African American pilots in the Tuskegee training program, having faced segregation while kept mostly on the ground during World War II. They are called into action
under the guidance of Col. A.J.Bullard (starred by Howard).
The $58 million budgeted movie grossed a total of $20.1 million in its three day opening weekend and opened to number two at the Box Office, behind Underworld Awakening.
Despite its good performance at the Box Office, the movie received poor to negative reviews. Review aggregator site, Rotten Tomatoes, report 33 percent of 81 critics gave it positive reviews, with an average rating of 5.1 out of 10. The site’s general consensus
states, “Despite a worthy fact-based story and obvious good intentions, Red Tails suffers from one-dimensional characters, corny dialogue, and heaps of clichés.”
Dallas Morning News’ Roger Moore gave it a score of two out of four and declared, “To its credit, the film gets at the things that gave the Airmen their lasting fame — the odds and racism they overcame, leading to the integration of the armed forces, the
civil rights movement and the integration of America.
Ben Sachs of Chicago Reader said, “This is so generic as storytelling that it fails even as a basic history lesson: it’s hard to believe that the stock conflicts on-screen have any connection to real events.”
James Berardinelli of the ReelViews was kinder to the film as he gave it a score of 2.5 out of four and said, “One can get away with a lot of cornball speeches a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away but it doesn’t work nearly as well a short time ago
on planet Earth.”
Overall, Red Tails is a good way to pass time with your buddies.
