A senior politician of Pakistan Muslim League (N) and the opposition leader in the National Assembly, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has said that the Supreme Court of Pakistan must look into the present role of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in the domestic
politics of Pakistan.
His statement has come in a response to the opening of an old case according to which ISI was found involved in funding some political parties in order to counter Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in the 1990s. The petition was filed by Air Marshal (retd) Asghar
Khan in the Supreme Court some time back.
Asghar Khan has recently joined Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI), which is rapidly emerging as the third major political force in the country. Chairman PTI, Imran Khan has also been urging the Supreme Court to hear the petition as it will expose the reality
of the Pakistani politicians. The petition will be heard on the 29th of February, 2012.
The list of politicians who took money from ISI includes the leader of PML (N), Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif and a number of other politicians of the country. Former ISI chief, General (retd) Asad Durrani had submitted an affidavit in the Supreme Court, in
which he confessed that he had given millions of rupees to the politicians to counter Benzazir Bhutto.
This case is bound to hurt the credibility of PML (N) and this is the reason why Nisar has lashed out at Imran Khan and the Supreme Court. PML (N) has been accusing since last three months that PTI is backed by the establishment of the country and Nisar
expressed that if Supreme Court is going to hear such an old case, it should also look into the present role of agencies in the internal politics of Pakistan.
Nisar said, “It would be a mockery of justice if the matter is not looked into by the court. If the Supreme Court can reopen a 23-year-old case then why can’t it investigate the role played by the agency during Musharraf’s rule and at present?”
While criticising the Chairman PTI, Nisar claimed that Imran had no role in reinstating judiciary. However, a number of political analysts in the country will disagree with this statement.
“Imran Khan used to visit foreign countries at the time when the movement for the reinstatement of sacked judges was at its peak, and disappeared on the eve of the long march,” said Nisar.
