Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani once again reverses his stance

In order to melt ice between the civil-military circles, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani once gain withdrew his words about statements of army and ISI chiefs they submitted to the Supreme Court in the inglorious memogate scandal.

The premier was speaking to the media at Chaklala airport before his departure for Switzerland where he would be participating in the World Economic Forum in Davos. He explained that his stance regarding army chief and DG ISI was pertinent in a specific situation that was given due to divergences in the statements of senior officials. Now the situation was clear, he added.

Gilani stated that he wanted to adjust the notion that the military officials’ act was unconstitutional and against the law. In his view now the situations has become clear and equivocalness have been figured out.

State TV channel quoted the premier, “I want to dispel the impression that the military leadership acted unconstitutionally or violated rules. The current situation cannot afford conflict among the institutions.”

His reversal appeared to be a bid to soothe the worst tensions between the country’s civilian leaders and the powerful military and came a day after a high-level meeting with top brass of the military to discuss a possible trilateral summit on the future of Afghanistan.

On January 10, the Prime Minister gave an interview to a Chinese newspaper, criticizing Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Kayani and Director General ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) Lieutenant-General Ahmed Shuja Pasha for filing responses in a Supreme Court probe into the memogate that has pitted the military against the civilian leadership.

He termed the replies unconstitutional that infuriated the military’s high command which responded with a stern press release, warning of “very serious ramifications with potentially grievous consequences for the country.”

The premier went on to say that the country cannot bear confrontations among the state organs and every institution has to work together to uphold its pursuits.
