Gillani takes another U-turn

Prime Minister of Pakistan, Yousuf Raza Gillani has said that his comments on the top military leadership earlier this month were because of the unclear situation prevailing in the country due to the memo-gate scandal and has taken back his statement.
Gillani had earlier said that the Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Kayani and the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief, LT. General Ahmed Shuja Pasha have given unconstitutional statements in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
The current regime of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has been facing confrontation with the judiciary and the military of Pakistan since last four months. There are some very important cases being heard in the Supreme Court of Pakistan and some of the political
analysts in the country feel that this government will not be able to complete its term.
However, the government is now trying to reconcile its relations with judiciary as well as the army. In past, PPP leaders have given aggressive statements against the Supreme Court and have openly violated the verdicts of the highest court of the country.
However, since last couple of weeks, the government has taken a soft stance towards the judiciary after getting the services of Aitzaz Ahsan, who is one of the most respected lawyers in the country.
In order to normalize the relations with the military establishment, Gillani said, "I want to dispel the impression that the military leadership acted unconstitutionally or violated rules."
This is not the first time that the Prime Minister has taken back his statement as this government has a history of taking U-turns in the last four years.
Majority of the political analysts feel that the current government is the worst in the 64-year-old history of the country and corruption is at its peak at the moment. Government institutions like Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), Pakistan Railways
and Pakistan Steel Mills are in danger of filing bankruptcy.
However, this government should be thankful to the media which has created a perception in the general masses of the country against dictatorship. Although, this is the most pathetic form of democracy in the country at the moment but the people want to let
the system flourish. It remains to be seen that for how long the Pakistani nation shows patience.
