Chaudhry Nisar says PML-N will not support constitutional amendment

In what appeared to be a quite shock to the government, opposition leader in the National Assembly (NA), Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, has ascertained that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) would not support any constitutional amendment.

Speaking to the media in front of the Parliament House, the central leader of PML-N said that opposition does not want to pressurize the election schedule. He, however, stated that formation of independent commission and accountability bill were essential to have free and transparent electoral process.

As usual, the government was at the receiving end of his criticism. He condemned the policies of the incumbent saying it was the main hurdle in the process of free and fair polls.

He was of the opinion that no mandate could be given to the government in present scenario.

Considering the importance of the electoral authority, he stressed that an independent commission should be created for holding the next general polls.

The opposition leaders went on to say that the appointment of a sincere and neutral election commissioner could only happen when the incumbent was sincere in doing so.

The government should try to induct a new election commissioner soon as only one-and-a-half month is left for his tenure to end, he added.

He observed, “To have free and fair elections in the country, it is important that we all stand united. Whoever tries to rig the elections will be an enemy of the country.”

Chaudhry Nisar clarified that there should neither be any confrontation within the institutions nor any deal.

He commented on Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s reversal regarding DG ISI and the army chief, saying the prime minister’s statements have become a joke and have insulted the country across the globe. “The prime minister should think before he speaks,” he remarked.
