FIA apprehends CPCL official for leaking information of Rehman Malik
Thursday, January 26th, 2012 12:44:53 by Faisal FarooqIn what appeared to be a quick response, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested an official of the Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) for allegedly leaking information of Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik.
Later, a scribe of private TV channel reported the leaked informed that was used for acquiring a cellular SIM card.
While speaking to the media, Habibur Rehman, an FIA inspector, confirmed the arrest but did not open the name of the captive. He also stated that the concerned authorities were also looking for the person who activated the SIM using Malik’s details.
The investigative agency, which became active on directives of the federal minister, apprehended five employees of National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) from the office near Lucky Star in Saddar. Conversely, they were set free after a brief questioning session.
Brigadier (Retd) Zahid Hussain, the NADRA’s chief of Sindh chapter, confirmed that FIA had contacted them after receiving information that someone had used Rehman Malik’s particulars for demanding a mobile connection.
The systems to which the information was traced back to had been used by three data operators, who were sent to the FIA office accompanied with their manager and assistant manager to make clear the things.
He observed, “There was no raid. We handed over our employees to FIA ourselves. But thank God no one was found involved.”
He was of the opinion that numerous institutions including banks, security agencies and law enforcement agencies have access to the NADRA’s catalog. In his view, Pakistan Telecommunication Agency (PTA) seems ineptitude of the in registering the mobile subscribers.
However, the PTA was not ready to take the responsibility of the incident. An official of the authority explained that they did not have right to use the database of NADRA. Shielding the cellular company, he observed that it had followed the set procedures for issuing a connection.
He asserted, “The SIM was activated after completing the required Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). The subscriber gave all the correct information. The FIA should arrest the man who actually got the SIM activated so that they can pin point where the information was leaked from.”
On the other hand, Ahmed Chinoy, the CPLC chief, did not comment over the situation, saying the entire matter will be revealed after a thorough investigation.
