Novak Djokovic reaches final of the Australian Open

Novak Djokovic, current world number one, defeated Andy Murray in the second semi-final of the Australian Open in Melbourne on Friday, January 27, 2012. He will meet Rafael Nadal in the final of the event.

Today’s match was a treat for the fans, as both players were at their absolute best. They gave a tough time to each other and took the game to five sets before the Serbian finally previaled.

Djokovic won the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-7(4), 6-1, 7-5 in a pulsating clash. He would have been under immense pressure after losing the second and third set, but managed to bounce back strongly in the end.

At one stage of the game, the Serbian player looked extremely exhausted and seemed to have no energy left at all. However, he somehow kept going and emerged victorious in the end.

The defending champion claimed that the match could have gone either way. He said, "It was so close. Both of us believed that we can win, and that’s how we played. In the decisive moments we were aggressive and wanting to win this match. I think
crowd enjoyed it as much as we did in competing. It could have easily gone the other way. He was couple of points away from winning the match, so I was lucky to go as a winner."

Commenting on the final, Djokovic said that it would not be an easy task to overcome Nadal, who defeated Roger Federer in the first semi-final of the tournament yesterday.

However, the Spaniard had struggled against Djokovic last year, which indicates that he will have to be at his best to win the championship.

On the other hand, Murray could have won today’s match, but he did start well at all, losing the opening set.

"I thought I was poor the first set," admitted Murray. "Then I started to play better and managed to turn around the second set playing better, and the third set. Some of the points in the second and third sets were brutal. They were so
long."
