The veteran singer, Shubha Mudgal, who is a renowned classical singer in India, believes the new masala songs which are being made these days will eventually prove to be a threat to the original Indian cultural music.
Shubha is given Bollywood industry some evergreen songs like ‘Ab Ke Sawan’, ‘Pyaar Ke Geet’ and ‘Mann Ki Manjeree’ but the award-winning singer reckons India will lose classical singers one day because of the new trends in the world of music.
“Today we see Bollywood music being played in every household, mostly because they are easily accessible. I have nothing against Bollywood music as I really enjoy it. But in the process we are losing out on the other genres. It would be very tragic if we lost them, as a lot of it will never come back,” Mudgal told IANS in an interview.
The 53-year-old Shubha is running her show ‘Baajaa Gaajaa’ for the past three years in order to keep people in touch with different styles of singing but when asked whether if she would like to sing any masala song, Shubha didn’t take much time in saying no, as she thinks she is not fit for the new songs at all.
“I’ve sung for Bollywood occasionally. But whatever I sing, it has to be something that I do justice to. I don’t see myself singing the kind of songs that are being composed nowadays,” she said.
Shubha, who is a winner of National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film Music Direction (1996) and Padma Shri award (2000), insisted that many out there still like listening to the classical music but the new generation is not into it much and the reason behind is perhaps lack of awareness.
Nevertheless, in the end Shubha, who is now gearing up for the fourth edition of her show, publicised she has no problems with the Bollywood music since she enjoys music a lot.
