Gilani does not fear prison

The Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani has recently claimed that he is ready and willing to go to prison if that would be the decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

The Prime Minister of Pakistan made the statement while he was in Davos attending the World Economic Forum and talking to the CNN.

Such a stance of the Prime Minister of Pakistan shows that the government of the country ruled by the Pakistan People’s Party is ready to pay all costs to defend the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan had been repeatedly asking the Prime Minister of Pakistan to write to the Swiss probe in order to start an investigation in which the President of Pakistan has been named for money laundering. However Yousuf Raza Gilani has
refused to act upon the request of the Supreme Court as a result of which the Supreme Court had summoned the Prime Minister of Pakistan to appear before it and explain himself for inaction.

The Swiss investigation was closed when the National Reconciliation Ordinance was signed by Bhutto during the time that the President of Pakistan was Gen. (retd) Pervez Musharraf. However, the apex court of Pakistan had deemed the NRO as illegal which in
effect asked for the re starting of the Swiss investigation against Asif Ali Zaradri.

Yousuf Raza Gilani commented on the matter in the following words: “That is the old case which has been pending for a long time for which the president has already served about eight years in prison and now as the president of the country he has complete
immunity.”

Having said that, Yousuf Raza Gilani also added that the Supreme Court of Pakistan had wanted the Pakistani government to write to the Swiss probe to “which we said that according to the Constitution he (the president) has a complete immunity not only inside
Pakistan, but also transnational immunity not only for the president, the prime minister and even the foreign minister.”

The political scenario in the country is unpleasant as there are tensions between the government and the military as well.
