Prime Minister of Pakistan, Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani has made it clear that if former president, General (retd) Parvaiz Musharaf returns to Pakistan, he will be arrested and will have to face the criminal charges.
Musharaf resigned from presidency in August, 2008 and since then he has been out of the country. There is a huge list of charge sheet on the former president, including violating the Constitution of Pakistan twice, the Lal Masjid fiasco, murder of Akbat
Bugti and the assassination of former prime minister, Benazir Bhutto.
Quite ironically, Musharraf was allowed to leave Pakistan by the present government and now Gillani is claiming that his government will arrest him on his arrival back home.
Gillani expressed that there are a number of charges against the former president which require justice. Supreme Court of Pakistan has already convicted Musharraf and the Premier said that the former Army chief will not be spared.
The Prime Minister said, “In fact, there had been murder charges against him, and there had even been some very grave charges against him, and the Supreme Court had already given a verdict against him. Certainly when he’ll come back, he has to face those
charges and certainly be arrested.”
This is yet another example of this government’s inconsistent policies and the question remains unanswered that why was Musharraf not arrested before he left the country?
One of the major criticisms on Musharraf is that he threw Pakistan in the war against terror and the drone attacks in the tribal areas of the country also started in his regime. However, this government has continued with the policies of former president
and fails to admit that Pakistan is fighting someone else’s war.
Gillani admitted that Pakistan’s economy has suffered because of the war on terror but said that the foreign investors are still interested in the country.
“We are fighting for our own selves, for our own survival, because these militants, they have killed 30,000 innocent people, 5,000 brave soldiers, Yes, we are fighting a war on extremism and terrorism, and we’re a frontline state, yes, there are a lot of
challenges. But it doesn’t mean that there is no investment coming to Pakistan,” said Gillani.
