Dustin Johnson
Sunday, January 29th, 2012 11:37:13 by Kashif KhanThe 27 year old Dustin Johnson was born on 22nd June 1984 in Columbia South Carolina. He is considered as the best athlete to play professional golf. His athleticism come from his family, his grandfather who was a basketball player at South Carolina and was a three time all Atlantic Coast Conference selection in the early 1960’s. Like his Grandfather Johnson can dunk a basketball and was able to palm a basketball as a 7th grader.
As an amateur Johnson won the Monroe Invitational in 2007 and was a member of the winning teams of 2007 Walker Cup and Palmer Cup. Later in the year he decided to turn professional. He finished in a tie for the 14th place in qualifying school and earned his 2008 PGA Tour card.
Turning Stone Resort Championship in October 2008 was Johnson’s first PGA Tour event win, and he did not have to wait too long for his second win which was at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, four months later.
In February 2010 Johnson successfully defended his AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am title against David Duval and J.B. Holmes.
At the 2010 PGA Championship, Johnson while in contention of winning a major going into the final round he unknowingly found himself amidst some heartbreaking controversy revolving around the strict golf laws and the accurate definition of a bunker. The Whistling Straits is notorious for its thousands of bunkers spread across the course, Johnson played his stroke and the ball landed left of the fairway and fell in between the crowd. Johnson went up to his ball and played it naturally as he would grounding his club, without realizing that the ball had actually fell into a bunker and the golf rule book states that if the ball lands in a bunker a player cannot ground his club. After a long conversation with the officials, Johnson was penalised 2 strokes and lost his way from there scoring 82 an all time low in a major for the last 99 years.
Johnson though a true athlete got right back up from a heavy disappointment of the PGA Championship and won the FedEx playoff even at the BMW Championship in September 2010. He continued his good form into the year 2011 and tied for 2nd at the 2011 Open Championship, resulting in Johnson entering the Top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
Johnson learnt a lesson at the 2010 PGA Championship, to put more focus on the game and its rules, Johnson has been known to be a guy who likes to have a little bit of fun and does not put as much effort and hard work in to his game as much as other great golfers do around him, his coach Butch Harmon acknowledging this fact. It is remarkable that Johnson has been able to get where he is now relying heavily on his natural talent. At 27 Johnson is maturing and learning to be more focused on his game, nurturing the talent he holds and deciding on how he wants to utilise it.
In college Johnson played baseball, basket ball, and football, he could have easily received a scholarship on any other sport, but he loved golf more and we as fans could not be happier at his decision.
