World Wide Web has penetrated so deep into the children of modern age that they feel incomplete without its access. Recently a new study took in 1,000 British children of age 12 and under
to study the impact of internet and found that the British children with age 12 and under feel sad because of the absence of internet connection.
According to the new research, 49 per cent of the children would feel sad without internet access while one in five would feel lonely. The survey was conducted by a project of Digital
Futures which questioned 1,000 youngsters in the UK between the ages of eight and 16.
The questionnaire was about internet’s impact on their lives which found that the teenagers have possessed a stronger emotional attachment to the internet than any other age group. The
survey showed a 60 per cent ratio of the children between 12 and 16 stated who said they will be sad if they do not have any internet connection. On the other hand, 48 per cent believed they would feel lonely.
The poll was conducted by Intersperience, a British research firm, which also discovered that family iPad is mostly dominated by the two-year-olds in the house, while most of the teens
are addicted to use different cell phones.
The chief executive of Intersperience, Paul Hudson stated, “The fact that children have a strong emotional attachment to the internet is often regarded as a negative thing but in fact
it is perfectly natural for a generation whose social life is largely online. It’s equivalent to taking a phone away from older people, they’d feel sad and lonely too.”
He added, “We matched the results against our Digital Selves research on adult behaviour and it shows that even eight to 11 years olds perform a wider daily range of tasks online than
grown-ups. Adults may be concerned about the strong emotional connection kids have to the internet today but our study shows that far from losing the art of conversation, children still prefer chatting to their friends in person.”
According to the survey, the children of 12 years of age are sophisticated internet users because most of them, 74 per cent, use internet just to play online games, while 65 per cent of
them use the web to do their homework. On the other hand, more than a third uses the web to locate things to buy or sell.
