To the Point – The Hypocrisy of Maya Khan and such TV Shows

Flooding the news during the past few days has been the firing of TV show host, Maya Khan, and her team by Samaa TV after receiving a number of complaints about one of her episodes which sparked outrage from the public in which she was shown as raiding public
areas and question young couples whether they were married or not and if their parents were aware of what they were doing.

Looking at Maya Khan and her now ended career, one can only but think that she really did deserve what happened and could see it coming by the way she was going overboard in each following episode.

In the start, I was a fan of her as she raided various places which truly did deserve being inspected, but later on, it moved on to the more pointless and viewer-based topics like dating in Pakistan.

Going into a public park and asking young couples whether they have their nikah nama in their pockets is preposterous and going to the extent of defaming them around bystanders and in front of millions of viewers was taking the situation to a whole new level
altogether.

Taking part in the race for ratings, Maya Khan could clearly been seen to have lost all moral values and what this country is truly in need of at the moment and that is informing the public about real issues and not about couples taking a walk in the park.

If she was so against youngsters intermingling and how this country’s religious values have gone down the drain, than why did not she do a show against the mafia funded prostitution or the drug crisis in Pakistan at the moment or even the mujras that are
so common nowadays?

Searching her name on Google images, it is not hard to see pictures of her in a number of such situations with strangers, certainly not with a burqa, making her a downright hypocrite.

At a time when the country is already facing religious extremism from all corners, Maya Khan did what she thought would give her more mullah minded following by bewildering people in public areas.

At a time when people have more important things to worry about like whether if they will be able to feed their children tomorrow or not, Maya Khan thought that going out and insulting people while they try and get away from the qualms of this world would
be a good thing to do.

Maya Khan got what she deserved and as for her career in media, it is safe to say that she will not be on TV for a long time to come.

But looking at the situation, Maya Khan is a symbol, a symbol of all the TV shows which have popped up like mushrooms in which people from all walks of life are humiliated and forced to do what they say instead of following a set procedure.

The other day, I was watching a show on Dawn News which showed a show host, walking up to traffic policemen and forcing them to show the tickets given out for the day. The policemen were reluctant at first since obviously, it is not something their allowed
to do which could also be considered infringement of privacy to whom they were awarded to.

But with the support of a number of raged spectators, the poor policemen could do nothing else but give in to the pressure.

Without a doubt, media in Pakistan has fought for the freedom of the press for many years during Musharraf’s regime, but being given that freedom, they were also given a huge responsibility but have taken that power too far now.
