General Musharraf fearing the welcome he’ll get in Pakistan
Monday, January 30th, 2012 2:10:05 by Faisal FarooqThe announcement of former president, General Pervez Musharraf, to put off his return to Pakistan barely came as a surprise for people since he had been proroguing his plans to come back from self-exile on one excuse or the other.
In the latest pretext, he observed that his party’s core committee and close aides had suggested him not to come Pakistan following repeated threats from the ruling PPP-government.
Interestingly, the annunciation in this regard by the Secretary General of the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) co-occurred with Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani’s statement that Pervez Musharraf would be apprehended on his homecoming.
He observed that there had been murder charges against the former president and the apex court had already given a ruling against him.
In his interview with British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the premier simply reiterated his government’s stance.
The former dictatorial president, who had ruled the country for about nine years, confessed in an interview on-aired earlier this month that he would be in danger in Pakistan. It is not without reason if he feels endangered.
He was issued a couple of court warrants for his apprehension in connection with the murders of Nawab Akbar Bugti and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.
He should be aware of the deep-rooted abhorrence against him for the excesses committed by intelligence agencies in Balochistan and other parts of the country on his regime.
Despite repeated rulings by the Supreme Court, there have been countless cases of mysterious disappearances which remained untracked. A large number of innocent people have been abducted across the country on the meager doubt of their connections with the militant outfits and later handed over to Americans for investigation.
Pervez Musharraf’s announcement to postpone his return has more to do with his incapability to secure iron-clad assurances from the world leaders for his safe homecoming.
Possibly, he had not learnt one of the most lessons of the history: “Despots and dictators are abandoned by their foreign masters once they lose their utility.”
His problem is that his tiny support base in political fronts is also eroding fast than anticipated. Those, who were considered his intransigent followers and supporters, have now commenced changing the parties.
Without a doubt, it’s a lesson for upcoming that how other ambitious generals were consigned to the pages of history in the past.
