The iconic 588 Wedge
Monday, January 30th, 2012 11:43:55 by Kashif KhanEvery car brand has one model that is an ambassador of the company’s brand, it speaks and epitomises the brand’s success and quality. Dodge has its Viper, Ford has the Mustang and Porsche has the 911. There is one thing in common in all the three cars.
The basic design of the car is never completely changed it may be tweaked a bit here and there but the main concept and design remains the same. Why? It is because that is how everyone likes it and that is the way everyone wants it, the guiding principle behind it is that if it “ain’t broke, don’t fix it”
When Cleveland Golf decided it was time to update the 588 wedge they took the same approach. The 588 has been used to win 26 major championships and 335 PGA Tour events, and it would be fair to say that the club is the foundation of the company.
When the 588 wedge hit the market it changed the way many golfers around the world looked at their golf bag and more specifically their short game. Cleveland Golf brought the 588 wedges and it took its space in every golfer’s bag over golf bag everywhere as the tools players used to score with.
Beginning in 2011, the Hackers paradise (THP) a website which started bringing the most in depth coverage of professional golfers and what they had in their bags for use with the Tour Spot and it created a buzz again about this extremely sought after wedge.
The changes they did go with are an updated logo, the back of the 88 has gotten a facelift, the shape of the club not surprisingly remains the same and the form it takes at address have not been altered at all. The club is still forged from 1025 carbon steel which gives it a soft feel, the new 99 has Cleveland’s Tour Zip grooves for the first time, and it also boasting a new laser-milled surface roughness treatment. The company first introduced the tiny lines on the CG15 wedges and were etched on the club’s face to help maximize spin.
Scott Carlyle, Cleveland Golf’s business unit leader for irons and wedges talking about the club said” This treatment helps to create a lot of friction between the ball and the face on every shot, from the rough and from the fairway”
The 588 Forged wedges will be available in lofts ranging from 46° to 64°. “We’ve provided all these lofts so you can optimize the gap spacing between every wedge in your set,” Carlyle says.
It is alsp available in low-, standard- and high-bounce offerings to ensure you’ll have the ideal amount of bounce for the sand and conditions you would mostly face often.
Both the satin chrome-finished and mirror chrome-finished 588 Forged wedges will come standard with a True Temper Tour Concept wedge shaft for about $140. They should be available in November this year.
