Ryo Ishikawa to star at the big event
Monday, January 30th, 2012 11:29:31 by Kashif KhanRyo Ishikawa, Japanese golfing star and pin-up, is the latest addition to the Golf Championship in the Asian Tour’s season ending in Thailand, starting in December.
Ishikawa is one of the most talented players to come out of Asia, and will be joining the likes of the new winner of the Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland, along with some of the best Asian Tour players in the inaugural US $1 million showpiece from December 15-18.
The Amata Spring Country Club, which is on the outskirts of Bangkok, will also be featuring World Number Two, Lee Westwood of England. This is Thailand’s most prestigious championship and will be hoping to feature as many star players as the event can.
The 20-year-old golfer, while talking to the media said, “I’m very excited to play at the Thailand Golf Championship. Many of the world’s best players have confirmed their participation and I’m glad to be a part of an elite field.”
Ishikawa, who is ranked at Number 46 in the world added, “The Amata Spring Country Club is a great championship test and I’m looking forward to competing at the venue again. It will provide a strong challenge to all the players.”
The Japanese player is not only popular in Asia, but also in Europe and United States, after making numerous appearances in all-four Majors. In the year’s Master Tournament, he secured his best place finishing, which was tied at 20th spot. He was adored more by media fans and players when he decided to donate his winnings from the 2011 season towards the restructuring efforts in Japan following the devastating tsunamis and earthquakes.
The highlight of his career came in 2010, when he fired a stunning 12-under-par 58 in the final round of the Crowns tournament and won the event by five shots. He recorded the lowest ever final round in any major international golf tour. He hopes to win the event and earn a spot to contest at the Championship Bridgestone Invitational in 2012.
