Monday, January 30th, 2012 11:43:23 by Faisal FarooqThe Supreme Court on Monday has granted the judicial commission, probing the memogate case, two more months to complete the investigation. The larger bench of the apex court, at the same time, permitted former ambassador to US, Hussain Haqqani, to travel abroad.
The apex court, took up the application of the commission that sought extension in the deadline to complete probe in the scam.
The three-judge commission, in its application, had prayed to the court that it was not possible for it to complete its probe within the given one month, so the deadline may be extended for completing the task.
The nine-member bench with Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry in the chair ordered that Hussain Haqqani can travel but after providing the details to the Registrar Office and should return on a four-day notice.
Earlier, Asma Jahangir, the counsel of Hussain Haqqani pleaded the court to ease travel restrictions placed on her client, who, she argued, had family abroad.
The larger bench of the apex court also took up the application of Barrister Akram Sheikh, who has been seeking from the court to direct the commission to record the statement of Mansoor Ijaz, the central player of memogate issue, in London due to security reasons.
On which, the bench accepted the application, saying it was up to the commission whether it wants to go abroad to record Ijaz’s statements or call him to Pakistan.
During the hearing, the CJ observed that the commission’s task was not completed yet and they would not interfere in it.
Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq informed the court that the government does not have any objections on the extension of the term given to the Memogate commission.
He, however, said that the Canadian company ‘Research In Motion’ (RIM), which carries the BlackBerry records, had refused giving the required data. He added that the company had said that it will consider if the Canadian government writes an application and Ijaz gives them a waiver in this regard.
The judicial commission comprises Chief Justice of Balochistan High Court Justice Faiz Essa, Chief Justice Sindh High Court Justice Mushir Alam and Chief Justice Islamabad High Court Justice Iqbal Abdul Rehman is probing the infamous memogate reportedly sent by then ambassador to US Husain Haqqani to former US Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen to pre-empt a military coup.
