There has not been much of a balance in terms of equivalency when there is a comparison in sports between the two genders, although Women tennis is a popular enough for sports enthusiasts but other sports do not really match up. Still even in tennis women struggle to make an impression compared to the men’s equivalent at least that is how the majority of fans and Tennis gurus see it as.
Golf on the other hand is very much balanced in terms of skill and competitiveness, and is gaining popularity as well. Still women golfers do not even get four tournaments a year with a prize money equivalent of the men’s. Instead they get a tour of limited commercial and public interest that has, in recent times have been dominated by one player, Yani Tseng.
She hardly has a international profile or reckoning in compared to the likes of how men golfers get media attention, that too considering Yani Tseng termed as the female coming of Tiger Woods.
Women’s golf post Annika Sorenstam feels much like a wasteland struggling on without direction, yet they showed on Sunday, just how entertaining it can get. It managed to produce of the of the most dramatic and exciting finished in the history of the sport, including the men’s golf.
Alison Nicholas’ European team, showed a lot of fire as they fought back against Michelle Wie in a very crucial comeback singles wins to ensure the hosts at Killeen Castle and somehow manages to eke out a 15-13 victory.
Even though at one point during the afternoon, they hope for a win was almost diminishing, but they clawed back, Pettersen said afterwards reflecting on her stunning birdie-birdie-birdie finish said,
“I don’t know. I seemed to be able to dig it out, but I seemed to get older every time it happens”, “I don’t know I think I have more gray hair than when I started today, but this is just fantastic.”
Earlier Hedwell the Swede, who won the PowerPlay tournament against the likes of Ian Poulter, has been a revelation. O’Toole has been another promising addition; a contestant on the Golf Channel’s reality show “Big Break” made the most of the sponsors’ invites and also managed to get a place on the LPGA Tour and surprisingly a wildcard place on the Rosie Jones’ team.
Somehow, there needs to be a way or at least an idea of working towards the goal of creating such drama more often than not in individual events to make women’s golf more interesting, the potential is definitely there, it just needs to be refined.
It is mostly up to the tour, the players and organisers to find the right recipe to make it that way and allow women’s golf room to make more of an impact on the game.
