Karachi: (Tuesday, January 31, 2012) Police here today unleashed its wrath on local teachers participating in a protest demonstration when they tried to head for Governor Sindh and Chief Minister houses.
Baton charged by the Sindh Police, the teachers, who were working on contractual basis and had passed their tests held at Institute of Business Administration (IBA) staged protest outside Karachi Press Club and demanded their service
regularization from the provincial government.
Considering the demonstrates of no use as no one from the provincial government took notice of the demonstration, the teachers decided to march towards governor Sindh and Chief Minister hosues, however, they could not succeed in
doing so as the police, using all means including water guns and tear gas shells, posed a decisive hindrance.
This erupted a riot which instantly turned the area outside Karachi Press Club into a battle ground. The police, besides baton charging the teachers, took about 20 of them into custody.
Water fired from water canon formed small puddles on the road around press club, while a teacher was also observed lying in a semi-conscious condition during the riot.
Some tear gas shells, fired by the Sindh Police also landed in the Karachi Press Club, putting the journalists working inside through hardships.
Meanwhile, taking notice of the situation, governor Sindh, Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan immediately issued an ordinance to regularize the services of about 5800 teachers working on contractual basis.
