Islamabad: (Tuesday, January 31, 2012) The Supreme Court of Pakistan, while taking suo motu notice of the drugs reaction among the patients at Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC), which caused dozens of deaths within last ten
days, has ordered the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to submit a detailed report on the case by February 06.
The apex court also directed the law enforcing agencies to release the doctors arrested on personal guarantees and asked doctors to not to give calls for strike. Besides the suo motu notice taken by the SC, a judicial commission
formed at the Lahore High Court will also continue its probe into the case.
Under the suo motu notice taken by the Supreme Court, investigation into over hundred deaths of the heart patients under treatment at the PIC will be conducted. The court will also look over whether these deaths have been caused
by spurious drugs or due to wrong prescriptions of blood thinning and lipid lowering medicines.
While taking notice of the issue, the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, notices have been issued to attorney general, Punjab advocate general, federal and provincial secretaries, DG FIA and IG Punjab.
Proceeding with the notice, the Chief Justice directed the office to register the notes as petitions under Article 184 (3) of the constitution as prima facie it seemed that Article 9 and 14 were not adhered to in their essence.
The chief justice further directed the office that the case be listed before a bench, headed by Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani and issue notices to the AG, the Punjab Advocate General, Secretaries health of the federal government
as well as government of Punjab, PPO Punjab and DG FIA to personally file a reply before the court.
