Cueists ready for 37th National Snooker Championship as PBSA plans to revive International Snooker

Potters from all around Pakistan are sharpening their cue sticks to make an impact during the upcoming 2012 37th National Snooker Championship in Karachi. The national snooker competition will feature 40 cuemen across the country who will participate in the event to achieve only one goal, the national title. The likes of Imran Shehzad, Muhammad Sajjad and Shahid Aftab will be present at the arena.

The national championship will also have two junior players along with the seniors. These juniors include Muhammad Hunain Aamir and Muhammad Majid, who impressed the snooker fans in the recently finished 2012 Under-21 Snooker Championship. The cueists have been divided into five groups and top two from each pool will qualify for the last-16.

Former National Champion and current Pakistan Number One ranked potter, Imran Shehzad, is keen to make an impact during the championship and regain his lost title this year.

He was speaking to the local media about the championship, “I have competitive cueists in my group but I can outplay them. The second round will be difficult. Senior players, including Mohammad Sajjad, Khurram Agha, and Asif Toba, will want to kickoff the year with the national title.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) is planning to revive international Snooker in the country in coming March.

“We are looking to stage a 6-nation event in March,” said the PBSA Chief, Alamgir Shaikh, “We have received confirmation from Iran with World Champion Hossein Vafaei as the part of its team.”

According to Alamgir, the winner and runner-up of 37th National Snooker Championship will book their spot in the 28th Asian Snooker Championship in Doha to represent Pakistan. The Asian event will commence in Qatar from April 20 this year.

Alamgir also announced the prize money for the national event. The prize money has been increased from Rs.125,000 to Rs.210,000 with the winner pocketing Rs.70,000 and the runner-up Rs.40,000 while the losing semi-finalists Rs.15,000 each.
