Indian artist, Pranava Prakash, who is famously known for making painting of Bollywood actors in nude, has been beaten up at the Espace Alternative galley in Nodia while he was exhibiting a number of nude paintings of Vidya Balan.
The 32-year-old artist was recently threatened for his painting when he conducted one of his exhibitions at the All-India Fine Arts and Crafts Society in New Delhi but the threat was not taken seriously by Prakash.
Yesterday evening Prakash was having an exhibition named ‘M.F. Husain: The Last Wish Fulfilled’ and among the paintings he showed Vidya Balan posing nude for the popular Indian painter, as Pranava was giving M.F. Husain a tribute in his own style of humour.
However, while everybody was enjoying the show, suddenly five people broke in and assaulted Pranava for his work. They also tore down his paintings before making a quick exit.
Pranava told AFP, “Five guys came in on Sunday and started yelling at me, saying ‘Your paintings are against Indian culture, we cannot tolerate them.’
“They slapped me twice, threw me to the floor and then began pulling down the paintings, damaging three of my pictures.”
The owner of Espace Alternative galley, Nishant Sinha, was also attending Pranava’s exhibition. Therefore, he also confirmed the Times of India about the incident.
Sinha confirmed, “Nearly four to five persons stormed into the gallery and shouted slogans against nudity. When artist Pranava tried to pacify them, he was thrashed and his paintings torn.”
Pranava previously portrayed nude picture of the Pakistani celebrity, Veena Malik, in an exhibition named ‘All Powerful Rupee: Pakistan Undressing to Earn Some’. Later on he portrayed nude paintings of Poonam Pandey in another exhibition, which was named as ‘Even Poonam Pandey Loves Anna’.
Nevertheless, the artist still believes such attacks should not happen because he thinks he is portraying the real image of India and has the rights to express his feelings.
“There is a certain section of people who think they alone are the custodians of Indian culture, and anyone who disagrees with them is the enemy.”
