After losing over hundred lives, Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has ultimately revealed the identification of the toxic medicine saying, “IsoTab was found to be adulterated with an anti-malarial.”
The CM while addressing a news conference informed the media that the drug IsoTab, produced by Efroze Chemical Industries, was found to have 50mg of an anti-malaria content, which the patients were given daily. “The dosage is 14-times greater than the prescribed dosage which is 25mg a week,” he added.
He further stated that the provincial government sent out samples to abroad in order to find out the actual cause of the deaths. “We not only sent out drug samples to the European labs, but also sent human samples, including traces of bone marrow and skin.”
According to details, the samples of Isotab (tablet), which were dispatched to a state-of-the-art lab in London, were tested as substandard and injurious to health.
He maintained that an antidote was also formulated which could reverse the affect of the drug overdose. The doctors, paramedics, pharmacists and health secretary of Punjab started to work on the antidote without wasting a second, he added.
He said, “Folinic Acid or Calcium Folinade has been found out to be the antidote, which is available in the form of injections. We have obtained this drug in large quantities and supplied it to the hospitals. And if necessary, we will even import this drug.”
He further briefed that experts believed that this antidote will show a positive sign and will save many lives. The first dose of this antidote was applied to the patients and now the second dose is underway, he stated.
Shahbaz Sharif also observed that the provincial government dispatched a letter to the concerned official in Islamabad, saying they stayed up all night long to make necessary arrangements to overcome the situation.
The CM confirmed that the forensic results were also sent out to the World Health Organisation (WHO) by European labs and that it banned the banned the concerned medicine across the globe.
About the factory, he stated that it had been sealed by the Inspector General of Sindh while the names of the owners had been put on Exit Control List (ECL). He went on to say that it is to be investigated that the drug reaction matter was a conspiracy or negligence.
