Nato has once again alleged Pakistan security services of assisting Afghan Taliban. Islamabad’s secret links with the Taliban’s have been claimed by Nato in a leaked secret document which was seen by BBC and The Times.
In the secret “State of the Taliban” report, Nato has claimed that Pakistan’s security forces are secretly assisting the Taliban in Afghanistan. The report has been derived from thousands of interrogations from insurgent detainees and was handed was reportedly
handed over to the Nato commanders in Afghanistan last month.
The report is based on material from 27,000 interrogations with more than 4,000 detained al-Qaeda, Taliban and other foreign fighters and civilians.
The document claims that Pakistan and its premier intelligence agency, ISI, are aware of senior Taliban leaders’ hideouts.
"Pakistan’s manipulation of the Taliban senior leadership continues unabatedly," alleged the report.
"Senior Taliban representatives, such as Nasiruddin Haqqani, maintain residences in the immediate vicinity of ISI headquarters in Islamabad," it said.
A senior al-Qaeda detainee has also been quoted in the report saying: "Pakistan knows everything. They control everything. I can’t [expletive] on a tree in Kunar without them watching."
Pakistan’s foreign ministry spokesman, Abdul Basit rubbished the accusations maintaining that his country is committed to non-interference in Afghanistan.
"We are committed to non-interference in Afghanistan and expect all other states to strictly adhere to this principle," said Abdul Basit when approached to comment.
"A stable and peaceful Afghanistan is in our own interests. We cannot indulge in any activity which takes us away from achieving that objective," he added further.
A spokesman for Nato’s International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) in Afghanistan, Lt Col Jimmie Cummings, said the document was "a classified internal document that is not meant to be released to the public".
