Kazuo Hirai is set to replace Sir Howard Stringer as President of the Sony Corporation effective on the 1st of April.

If it turns out to be an April Fool’s Day joke, it could be the greatest one in history, yet with Sony’s track record and reputation Kazuo Hirai’s scheduled appointment as the President of the consumer electronics giant, Sony, is not to be taken lightly.

The move should indicate which direction the company are set to go in the coming years, with Hirai being the former President of Sony Computer Entertainment, which happens to be the division of Sony responsible for everything PlayStation.

Sony have already released their second generation of portable gaming consoles with the PlayStation Vita on shelves in Japan and the US, along with other regions set to get the console by the end of the current month.

At the same time things are heating up with respect to the next generation of home consoles as well, with Nintendo already having revealed the Nintendo Wii U and Microsoft set to announce the Xbox 720 at E3 this year.

With Hirai at the helm, one would expect Sony to be heading in to more of an entertainment product setting, with home consoles and entertainment assets being the primary focus. Hirai however was quick to rebuff that stating that he wanted to focus on diversifying
the electronic portfolio, or as Sir Howard Stringer put it:

“Kaz is a globally focused executive for whom technology and the cloud are familiar territory, content is highly valued, and digital transformation is second nature. I believe his tough mindedness and leadership skills will be of great benefit to the company
and its customers in the months and years ahead.”

Sony had a tough last year under Stringer as the company lost over $170-million due to the cyber attack on its servers, where it is understood that hackers managed to get their hands on a large amount of user data, including passwords and credit card details,
from Sony’s database.

The company have since taken extra measures to bulk up their security in what was a wakeup call for the entire industry.
