PFF looking to secure AFC President’s Cup rights
Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 5:00:08 by Shahrukh SohailThe Pakistan Football Federation are reportedly making a surprise bid to host the 2012 AFC President’s Cup, in which Premier League side KRL are also due to take part.
After successfully hosting the prestigious tournament, the PFF have again expressed an interest in securing the rights for the 2012 edition.
Pakistan Premier League champions KRL are one of the teams participating in the tournament and given the quality of the squad at their disposal, they have a chance of making it far and home advantage would be a valuable asset to have.
The competition features 12 teams from ‘developing’ Asian nations, who are only now showcasing their talents at the highest level. Pakistan has never been able to get their hands on silverware since its inception and only WAPDA have made it to the semi-final
stage.
Despite lackluster performances from Pakistani sides, PFF secretary Col Ahmad Yar Khan Lodhi has declared the Federation’s decision to bid for the hosting rights this year.
Speaking to reporters, the official said that they will apply before the 12th February deadline and were hopeful that AFC would allow them to stage the tournament like they had done five years ago.
“We are interested in hosting the AFC President’s Cup and will apply for it formally before February 12, which is the last date for submitting bids. Hopefully, we will be able to get the hosting rights as we also successfully conducted the event in 2007,”
Lodhi said.
Even if the PFF do secure the hosting rights, it remains to be seen if KRL are able to put up a decent display and reach the latter stages of the competition.
