Petroleum price hike bombshell for already hapless masses

The latest increment in the petroleum prices and subsequent foreseeable increase in the prices of daily-usage commodities will certainly add to the burden of the gloom of the already wretched masses.

One does not find anyone even remotely concerned about the plight of poor people whose numbers are increasing with each day, as the ruling lot is busy saving the skins of its top brass while opposition is busy in politicking.

In the present scenario, living has for sure become over- pricy in the country. One of the key responsibilities of the government is to facilitate people to lead a dignified life, which is not true in this particular case.

Such task can only be done by any government through good governance, a concept which is unfamiliar to our rulers. What should we do in this particular state of affairs?  At the same time, the huffing and puffing from opposition parties failed to put off the mistreatment to the poor at the hands of the pitiless rulers.

Everyone knows how many leaders from the opposition parties made serious efforts to compel the incumbent into taking solid steps to redress the miseries of common people. In reality, they are waiting in the wings to occupy the beatified offices in place of the present rulers.

The anarchy is not far-fetched odd anymore but rather a harsh reality that stares in the faces when an ever-increasing number of people sliding below the poverty line and triggering of mass-scale social unrest.

It seems that the incumbent is in no mood to control the descending slide of the economy. It is only dreaming to resolve the problem of poverty by throwing some crumbs at a select few through the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).

If the opposition is really serious in addressing the problems, it should exert pressure to compel the incumbent to take steps that are economically sane and shift the burden of taxation from the bottom to top.

It will be hard rather impossible for all aspirants to political offices if the prevailing situation goes on. Any extra decline in the country’s financial situation will make the repeatedly promised spin crushingly difficult if not altogether impractical to achieve.
