It has recently been announced that the Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani is going to be making a visit to Qatar on an official level in order to discuss peace efforts in the war torn region of Afghanistan with the leadership there.
The news was broken to the public by a government official in the following manner: "Yes the reconciliation process in Afghanistan would come under discussion during the talks with Qatar’s leadership."
This step is being taken by the government of Pakistan which is ruled by the Pakistan People’s Party after an announcement made by the Taliban that they intend to set up a political office in Qatar. The Taliban revealed their intention the previous month
and stated that the purpose was to hold possible talks with the United States of America.
The relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have not been on a positive side lately and neither have they been on the mend with the Taliban. The Afghani government has given its affirmation to engage in talks with the Taliban.
This recent development has taken place a few days after the release of a NATO report that claimed that the government of Pakistan is involved with funding the Taliban militia. The report has named not only the Pakistani government but also the military
of the country in the matter. However, the Pakistani government has rejected the report and has denied any such connection with the Taliban.
The relations between NATO and Pakistan have been on their worst since the past decade which was triggered by the air strikes by NATO on two of the Pakistani border posts last year. The airstrikes caused the death of 24 Pakistani soldiers. Despite the fact
that the NATO forces were being contacted by the Pakistani counterparts to stop the air strikes, no positive response came from NATO for a period of two hours. The military of Pakistan said that the air strike was a show of brutal aggressions while the NATO
forces were adamant on the stance that there was error on both sides. However, the Pakistani stance was that the air strikes were unprovoked.
