Former Pakistani captain Shahid Afridi was officially unveiled as United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s (UNODC) chief ambassador in a ceremony in Islamabad yesterday.

The 31-year-old was chosen for the prestigious role, as he has endeared himself to the Pakistani public over the years, with his superb performances on the field and clean chit reputation off it.

A highly respected figure, Afridi was welcomed by UNODC officials to the Shalimar Ground yesterday, where he penned two year deal to confirm his goodwill ambassador status with the organization.

Throngs of public and media personnel alike, flocked to F-6/3 in order to catch a glimpse of the legend with their own eyes and many chose to have photographs and autographs taken from him.

Afridi duly obliged but was also vocal in his support for the new responsibility he had taken up. Amongst his duties will be promoting anti-drug abuse, taking part in various functions, playing in a proposed youth tournament and taking part in the International
Day against Drug Users.

The former skipper also reiterated his desire to create awareness about the hazards of drug abuse and claimed that he would do his utmost best in order to stop people especially youngsters from picking up the habit.

While most of the media was intent on quizzing the former Melbourne Renegades man about his cricketing view points, Afridi continually advised them to stick to the program and debate on the drug issues on hand.

After penning his contract, Afridi was taken back to his hotel and after a brief acquaintance with the UNODC Youth group; he made his return to Karachi.

Drugs have become one of Pakistan’s major Achilles heel to development and it is quite refreshing to see International heroes such as Shahid Afridi trying their best to alleviate the problem from the country.
