Defence Minister of Pakistan Ahmad Mukhtar advocates reopening of NATO supply lines

The Defence Minister of Pakistan Ahmad Mukhtar has recently made a statement in which he has said that the country should re open the supply lines to NATO troops. The Minister is of the opinion that the reopening of the lines should be done after having
discussions with NATO about the negotiating a better deal in compensation for providing the NATO forces with a route through which their supplies can be transported.

The government of Pakistan ruled by the Pakistan People’s Party had closed down the supplies lines to the NATO troops two months ago. This had been done after the NATO forces had carried out an unprovoked attack on two of the border posts of the country.
The unprovoked aggression carried out by the NATO forces had caused the deaths of a total of 24 Pakistani soldiers.

The NATO forces had been contacted by the Pakistani military in an attempt to make a request to the NATO forces to stop the air strikes but the attack had gone on for a period of two hours. The military of Pakistan had termed the attack as unprovoked aggression
and the government of the country had demanded an apology but the NATO forces had not conceded on its fault and assumed the stance that an error had occurred on both the Pakistani as well as the NATO side.

The suggestion made by the Defence Minister was responded to by the Foreign Minister of the country, Hina Rabbani Khar who stated her opinion by saying that the re opening of the supply route to the NATO forces could be done but that would be subject to
a vote by the parliament of the country.

After the attack made by NATO last year, the relations between Pakistan and NATO as well as the United States of America reached their lowest yet in the entire previous decade. Negative sentiment against both the super power as well as the NATO forces grew
in the public as well.

The Defence Minister made the following statement regarding the matter:”I think the people who are deciding, who are giving recommendations, will make the right decision.”
