Russian Foreign Minister lashes out at his country’s critics in U.N
Tuesday, February 7th, 2012 3:30:16 by Hamza JahangirRussia’s foreign minister, Sergey V. Lavrov, on Monday lashed out at critics of Russia’s decision to veto a United Nations resolution on Syria and reiterated objections to the plan, which was aimed at stopping the violence there.
“There are some in the West who have given evaluations of the vote on Syria in the United Nations Security Council that sound, I would say, indecent and perhaps on the verge of hysterical,” Mr. Lavrov said, according to the Interfax
news agency. “Those who get angry are rarely right.”
In the wake of the United Nations vote this weekend, there has been widespread international condemnation of Russia and China, which also vetoed the measure. Susan E. Rice, the United States ambassador to the United Nations, said
she was “disgusted” by the vetoes.
Speaking at a news conference after meeting with Bahrain’s foreign minister, Mr. Lavrov once again criticized the resolution for failing to hold opposition forces accountable for violence they have committed in their fight against
the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
He also said the vote should have been put off until after he and the head of Russia’s foreign intelligence service, Mikhail Y. Fradkov, met with Mr. Assad in Damascus. Moscow has released few details about the planned meeting,
which is supposed to take place on Tuesday.
