Apple Macbook Air: The competition this slim device is facing in the market
Tuesday, February 7th, 2012 1:45:02 by Usman KhalidThe year 2011 was considered the year of tablets as countless slates kept hoarding in the market with Android tabs slapped on their faces but only a handful of them could make a mark. However, the new technology rose from the heels of notebooks during that time. The ultra-slim laptops took a big leap at the start of this year. One of the main technology events in the world, Consumer Electronic Show 2012 was dedicated to such laptops.
However, the main contenders in the market still remain the older ones, Apple’s Macbook Air and Asus’ Zenbook. Apple being the pioneer of such category still reigns the market place with one of the most attractive devices. The Macbook Air not only competes with other ultra-slim laptops but is also in direct intra-organization competition with Macbook Pro.
Given the absence of a couple of peripherals in the Air, the Pro takes the lead among professionals but for everyday normal usage, the Air still remains the best device in the market. The absence of an optical drive and a quad-core processor might be a kick-back to the slim notebook but the sheer shape and size takes the device ahead of the Pro in the competition.
The track-pad multi-finger gestures, graphics and screen resolution are the same as the Pro. Moreover, the processing capabilities are also not as bad as one would think. The only drawback is the price bay in the two laptops.
For a price in tune of $1400, the Pro is still a good bargain for the money paid as compared to the $1200 Air. On the other hand, the Air also losses the price battle from its competitors in the same category.
Most of the ultrabooks in the market like Asus Zenbook, Toshiba Protégé and HP Folio cost under a thousand dollars. Being some of the most attractive devices in the market with low prices, these laptops have come neck-and-neck in the competition.
The Protégé is the best looking device in the market and by far the thinnest in the category. Folio, on the other hand, has an optical drive, the only moving peripheral inside the chassis.
These features make the Macbook Air somewhat the underdog in the competition but its takes the leap ahead of all of them where it matters the most. The Apple products are known for their performance and Air is no exception.
