The feed into T004 via stream 10 is at a constant flow rate 2.25m3/hr. This is provided to the tank on a continuous basis and operates for a 24 hours per day whereas; the stream exiting the tank flows for only a 20 hour period per day – during
the batch fermentation period. The stream exiting T004 also does not flow at a constant rate but instead increases exponentially throughout the 20 hour batch period.
The total in and out volumetric flow rates are equal throughout a 24 hour period, 54m3, but to achieve such a steady-state condition and ensure that enough substrate is always available for the fermentation the minimum volume of the holding tank
would be 27m3. However, to give the operation some degree for error the volume of T004 is 35 m3.
The flow from T004 goes via stream 11. The flow of stream 11 is directed, by P111, to several possible resulting pipe works via the valves V084 to stream 12, stream 13, stream 19 and stream 23. The direction of the flow at this point depends on what stage
of the fermentation the reactors are at.
The temperature of stream 11 and all its divisions are assumed to be the same as when the substrate has left the sterilising unit, 30°C. The concentration of the flow is set to be a constant value of 320kg/m3. This means that since the fermentation
is set to be run in a fed-batch manner with the concentration of the feed constant and with the fermentation designed to be run with a constant concentration in the bioreactor of 0.25kg/m3.
Therefore, the flow rate of the substrate will have to be altered throughout the process of the fermentation. This increase will be of an exponential scale to correlate with the exponential growth of the yeast cells.
