Pakistan and Russia to strengthen ties

Wednesday, February 8, 2012: Pakistan and Russia have decided to forget the past and look towards the future by strengthening their ties and promoting bilateral relations. The two countries will lay support to each other in various
fields of everyday life, with special emphasis on energy and people to people contacts.

Hina Rabbani Khar, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister who is on to a three day tour of Russia met with Viktorovich Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister in the city of Moscow to discuss ways of strengthening and expanding ties between the
two sides.

After the detailed meeting, both Foreign Ministers attended a joint press conference to answer a few questions. During the press conference, Khar said, “There has been a scope for cooperation between the two countries in different
areas and all aspects for improving cooperation had been discussed.”

Pakistani foreign minister and Lavrov also exchanged views on issues of mutual interest. They also discussed increasing cooperation in energy, infrastructure development, agriculture, science and technology sectors.

Khar said that Pakistan had received a very encouraging response from Russia for more investment in Pakistan Steel Mills and an interest in investing in different energy projects like Thar Coal, which has the potential to generate
enough energy for the country that could last for years to come.

Khar said, “We are looking forward for the energy group meeting to be held within the first half of this year.”

The Foriegn Minister, on behalf of President Asif Ali Zardari, invited the Russian leadership to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting that will take place in Pakistan.

Sharing her views on the significance of SCO, Khar said that it is an exceptionally important opportunity and that Pakistan had been actively participating in the deliberations of the SCO and seeking permanent membership. Khar
also thanked Russia for extending support in this regard.

Khar further divulged that both countries had also agreed to augment parliamentary interaction besides increasing cooperation on the foreign minister level.
